We are looking into the DI 52 and want some advice from usres running the press. Would you buy another?
We don't have any front end CTP some a Di would make sense as it will replace our current 2 colour GTO, based on that is DI the route or put the front end in and buy a speedmaster 52 4 colour?
What is the current for a DI 52 with all the toys in USA?
Please help as I am may sign for this machine on Friday, tell me if I am making a mistake?
We currently have 2 colour xerox DC 250's and a 2 colour GTO 52, will the DI take work off these presses?
Many thanks for your time

Hi,
The Speedmaster 52 is a great machine, you can get some very good examples second hand but they are not cheap, it does have the edge on DI presses but of cause you will need a CTP unit. Another press to consider is a used Heidelberg QMDI either a plus or a pro version. These can now be picked up for good money considering what they where when they where new.

The PressTek 52 is the most expensive 520MM press to run. Take into consideration, plate cost, plate cleaning rolls and maintenance contract. Every make ready will cost more then double of competitive iron.
A new traditional press with pre-inking, auto color correction and auto wash is much more profitable & just as easy to operate.
An offline CTP with a new SM52 or Ryobi 524 is by far a much better direction.
Simply review the operating costs on a DI Vs. traditional series press and you will have a easy decision to make. |

Even though this response is very late for you, but will help other users. We have been a DI shop for 3 years and I ink personally the cost of plates for a DI press compared to conventional press is equal or the same. The pre-press is on the press and for $9/plate it is actually very cheap. No need for a CTP, No need for metal plates, no extra space required, no employee required if you are using a DI. If you add those up it will be more than $9/plate, so it is very cheap. 52 DI is not a cheap press, will run anywhere btw 400-500K dollar. The only issue i have by running the 34DI is the lack of AQ coating and the new version of Presste 52DI with AQ is very expensive.
Go for a 34 DI - you can find them cheaper and used also. But if money is not an issue go for a 52 DI.
Hope this helps Shawn

Yes, had a 34 and now a 52 for two years now. The only way a conventional plate can score better is if you store them carefully and re-use them over and over. Normally this just leads to scratches and crap print quality though.
The plates are very comparable to aluminium ones i think.
Printers don't get old, they just loose registration. |
