Sorry if this doesn't make the most intelligent question but... We have been printing with a DI for 1 year now and finding little quirks with some of the ways they origionally set up the prepress and press. For example our proofer was set to GRACoL settings but the press was set to read on the SWOP settings! I am a pressman for just over 23 years and this is the first DI I have run! But my understanding of the prepress is that if we use GRACoL in the prepress the DI should read under the GRACoL settings as well! In turn makeing things work hand in hand so when I get a job I can actually match the really sharp crisp color that our proofer can get us! If anyone can tell me what you are useing and if anyone else is set up the same way we were I will relay the message to our prepress and hopefully get us back into the swing of being able to match the proofs that our customers sign off on for good color! PRESSMAN LOOKING FOR HELP TO HELP HIS PRE-PRESS! THANKS!!

Our press operator had also lots of trouble making the proof match to the press. The proof output was too vibrant and it was way out of wack. Our press was much more closer to the actual output. Finally it came down to the cheap MProof software which Presstek gave us for $1000.00 bucks along with the Epson 7800 which is a great proofing printer.

So what did we do - we installed EFI Fiery XF4 and had Spectraflow come and setup the proofer and match the output to to 2 of our stock i.e. uncoated and coated profiles. Now our proof matches easily with the press output. Our press operator is very happy. We also went for Gracol 7 Certification to become a Master printer (currently in application phase) so our colors are now to the G7 standard.

Ask your pre-press if he using MProof for the proofer (part of Momentum), if that is the case, then good luck. Then talk to your boss and tell them to spend some money to upgrade to the EFI Color Proof or Fiery XF4 (will run around $5000+)

I know how you feel as my press operator had the same issues.

Best of luck
Shawn
